A bunion, also known as hallux valgus, is a deviation of the big toe towards the smaller toes. This results in a prominent bump on the inside part of the foot at the base of the toe. Symptoms may include pain and swelling. A similar condition known as a bunionette can affect the 5th toe. A hammer toe can be associated with a bunion or it can occur alone. This is a curling of one or more of the smaller toes. It can lead to a painful callus on the top or end of the toe. Initial treatment includes wearing wide shoes with a deep toe box or padding painful areas. Special toe braces or toe crests can help straighten hammer toes. Surgery is reserved for painful deformities that interfere with daily activities.
