There are several deformities of the foot and ankle that frequently involve the arch. In a flatfoot deformity, the arch collapses. In a cavus foot, the arch is pronounced and high. In both conditions, the weight bearing mechanics and joint forces are altered. Instability, painful calluses, and joint arthritis can result. A variety of braces and orthotics may help relieve symptoms. Surgery is often needed to relieve pain and restore function.
